Evil Dead (2013) | Intense! Scary! Exciting! This reboot of the original horror classic is everything it should be

Five friends go to a cabin in the woods to help druggie Mia (Jane Levy) go cold turkey where they find an occult tome bound in human flesh and sealed with barbed wire in the cellar. When one of the curious friends recites a passage from the Naturon Demonto, he awakens a demonic spirit that then takes hold of Mia.

Sensing the evil inside of her, Mia begs her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) to return home. But David, who is trying to make amends for a past misdeed, decides to lock his little sister up so that she can complete what she started. It’s a decision David soon regrets as the spirit sets out to consume the five souls it needs to rise from its netherworld lair…

The most terrifying film you will ever experience!
2013’s Evil Dead reboot is some seriously scary fun, and way better than it ought to be. The producers of the original horror classic (Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell) certainly found the right person in Fede Alvarez to direct their daring re-conception, as he stays true to the gleeful goriness of the original while giving fans everything they could want from a big budget horror flick: convincing story, characters you can care about, and masterfully conceived set pieces featuring outrageous, bloody scenes involving a carving knife, needles, a nail gun and (in a nod to the original) a chainsaw.

Evil Dead (2013)

It’s been a long time since I was so genuinely frightened, repelled and fascinated all at the same time, and I’d happilu shake Alvarez’ hand for giving fans such a ballsy new chapter in the Evil Dead franchise (although some critics might disagree). It’s all pretty amazing when you consider the 35-year-old Uruguayan director has only ever done a couple of short films. His 2009 YouTube hit Ataque de Panico! (which you can watch below) was what caught the attention of Sam Raimi and co.

Evil Dead is available on Blu-ray, DVD and for rent on YouTube in the UK
